Art:21 - Fine art in the 21st Century is a PBS serial, educational resource, annal, and history of contemporary fine art. It premiered in 2001, and is now broadcast in over 50 countries worldwide. Premiering a new season every ii years, Art:21 is the simply series on U.s. television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists. Information technology is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 to brand gimmicky art more accessible to the public, and to certificate 21st-century art and artists from the artists' own perspectives. Their overall goal is to enhance the contour of major players in the world of contemporary art and to encourage inventiveness. The principal office is located in New York City.

Each flavour is separated into episodes by themes. Each theme showcases artists that fit into that niche in some fashion.

Flavour one (2001):

  • Place – Introduction by artist Laurie Anderson. Featured artists are Richard Serra, Sally Mann, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, and Pepon Osorio.
  • Spirituality – Introduction by Beryl Korot and South. Epatha Merkerson. Featured artists are Ann Hamilton, John Feodorov, Shahzia Sikander, and James Turrell.
  • Identity – Introduction past comedian Steve Martin, and artist, William Wegman. Featured artists are Bruce Nauman, Kerry James Marshall, Maya Lin, and Louise Bourgeois.
  • Consumption – Introduction by artist Barbara Kruger, and onetime professional tennis role player John McEnroe. Featured artists are Michael Ray Charles, Matthew Barney, Andrea Zittel, and Mel Chin.

  • In May 2016 the schedule for an eighth flavor was announced, air dates to start in September of that twelvemonth. Actress Claire Danes hosts each episode of the 8th season, each focusing on one of iv North American cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Vancouver.[1]

  • The Curatorial Quango A nationally based group that helps to gear up the basis for each of the Fine art:21 - Art in the 21st Century seasons.
  • Educational activity Informational Council A group of nationally recognized educators in 1000-12, higher instruction and museum instruction that contribute insight in strategic planning to support Art21's core education mission.
  • The Humanities Advisory Council A group of Humanities scholars who aim to help establish a relationship between visual art and humanities disciplines.
  • The International Council An international group of scholars, arts professionals, museum directors, critics and curators that supports Art21's global commitment to education and admission.
